Introducing The Remora Method: Earn a Side Income of $500/Week (or More)

A few months ago, I started doing research on the best ways to earn more money.

In the end, I found something surprising.

There are a group of people who are consistently earning money with a strategy that is the complete opposite of what most people do.

Let me explain with a story, so that you fully understand…

The remora

There is a small fish called a remora that is very different from most fish in the ocean.

The typical fish battles the harsh conditions of the ocean by themselves or in a small group. They are constantly in search of food and continually on the lookout for their predators.

But the remora is different.

The remora has developed a special fin on top of its back that acts as a suction cup. This fin allows the remora to attach itself to larger marine animals like sharks and manta rays.

Here is a picture of a remora using its special fin to attach to the bottom of a shark.

The animal that the remora is attached to — for example, the shark in the photo above — is known as the host species.

The host provides the remora with transportation through the water, protection from predators, and with chunks of food that are dropped while the host eats. In exchange, the remora cleans bacteria and other parasites from the host.

This mutually beneficial relationship allows the remora to avoid the struggles that most fish deal with on a daily basis. And within the remora’s strategy is a key insight that successful people use to boost their income…

The Remora Method for Boosting Your Income

Just as the remora partners with a strong host species to provide protection and food, you can partner with a strong host business that can easily provide you with a supplemental income.

During my research, I found many examples of people who have done just that.

For example…

A woman named Lisa was the recent mother of twins when she decided to start selling Mary Kay makeup in her small town. But instead of going door–to–door, she partnered with a local business to sell her makeup in the store. Twelve months later she was making $50,000 per year from this side business.

A man named Tom was let go from his regular job and decided he wanted to be a consultant. There was just one problem: he didn’t have any previous clients. He decided to work as a subcontractor with some consultants that were doing similar work and almost immediately began making over $100,000 per year. It cost him zero dollars to get started.

A woman named Rebeca enjoyed making jewelry out of metal rings. She partnered with local jewelry and craft shops to teach classes on how to make her jewelry. During one class she decided to sell the raw materials to her students so they could make the jewelry on their own. That day she made $300. Eight years later, her jewelry supplies business pulls in almost $1 million per year.

Compare Those Results to The Typical Struggle…

In addition to interviewing dozens of experts who are earning money regularly, I also surveyed thousands of people who want to make more money, but haven’t figured out how to do it.

Here’s what they said…

“I’m worried about risking my money, wasting too much time planning, and never doing anything. How are other people living the good life with freedom and money and I haven’t found my niche yet?”

“I hate having to sell myself or a product. How do I make sales without being a “car salesman”?

“My biggest fear is to have a great idea, and spend lots of time working on it and developing it but not knowing how to get started, how to attract customers and how to make sales.”

“Marketing, marketing, marketing. I have set up a business and I am trying to focus on getting the word out there…. it is not happening fast enough. How I can reach more people or future clients?”

“I struggle with lack of knowledge and direction. I broadly know what I want to do but have absolutely no idea how to start and how to go about building the skill sets required for it.”

What’s the difference between these two groups?

It’s obvious that both groups are trying hard, but notice the different approaches that are being used.

The first group is focused on developing mutually beneficial partnerships where they can bring a skill and the other side can bring a customer. The second group thinks they have to do it all themselves.

The first group spends their time finding one partner that they can work with over and over again. The second group is always struggling to find the next customer and worries about having to sell their work.

The first group spends very little money to get started, and in some cases none at all. The second group thinks the only way to build a side business is by risking your own money.

The first group looks for someone who can get their idea out to the world. The second group is stuck on a continual loop of planning, researching, and trying to get all of their ducks in a row. In the end, they always feel like there is something else they need to know before they can get started.

Which group would you rather be in?

Most people think you need to figure out all of the pieces of the puzzle to successfully earn more money. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

You really don’t need to understand that much of the process.

Here’s a business secret: You only need to do one piece of the puzzle well. If you can provide a product or service that people want, then you can almost always find someone who can market it and promote it for you.

This partnership approach to earning more money is what I call The Remora Method.

Let me show you how it works…

The Remora Method

Just as the remora partners with a shark to get food and protection, you can use The Remora Method to partner with a business to get customers and boost your income.

The Remora Method can be summarized in three steps.

  1. Choose a profitable idea that excites you.
  2. Find a business that your product or service can help.
  3. Partner with that business and share the profits.

You can then diversify by setting up partnerships with multiple businesses, which will send you paying customers from multiple sources.

This approach is also incredibly versatile. I’ve seen this method succeed in virtually every industry.

This includes…

  • Selling a physical product (you can partner with a store)
  • Selling a digital product (you can partner with an internet marketer)
  • Selling a service (you can partner with a freelancer or consulting firm)

As long as you bring a product or service someone needs, you can find someone else to do the rest.

How to Use The Remora Method

So how do you know that people want your product or service? And how do you find people and businesses to partner with? And what do you say to them?

I’m going to help you answer those questions.

I’ve created a whole course around The Remora Method with classes on how to find a profitable idea, choose the best one for you, find a business partner, connect with them, and much more. This course teaches you step–by–step what to do to build a side income.

Beginning in a few days, I’m going to give access to this course to a small group of people and then I’m going to work with them to implement The Remora Method and earn a side income.

Eventually, I’ll open this up to everyone, but for right now I’m only going to share it with a small group of people who are serious about using The Remora Method to partner with businesses and boost their income.

But don’t worry, even if you miss out on the limited slots, you can still get the first lesson of The Remora Method for free.

Here’s how…

What You Should Do Now

I’m putting together a priority notification list for The Remora Method. When the course launches in a few days, the people on the priority notification list will get the first crack at the open slots.

Additionally, I will send the first lesson of The Remora Method to you (for free) if you join the priority notification list before tomorrow.

Yes — even though it’s taken 3 months of work and over 5,300 data points, surveys, and interviews for me to develop The Remora Method, I’m still going to give you the first lesson for free.

To get the free lesson and priority notification of when The Remora Method opens, simply enter your email below.

Note: this email list will only be used to notify you of The Remora Method.

Disclaimer: I’m sure you’re smart enough to know this already, but for legal purposes I have to make this clear. Any results mentioned here or elsewhere about The Remora Method should not be considered typical. In fact, your results have more to do with your work ethic, approach, and actions than anything else. No results, earnings, or outcomes of any type can be guaranteed from using The Remora Method.

  1. Chris says:

Great job, James. Hey, do you have wiretaps connected to my brain or something? I’m launching a new product soon and have been working on finding ways to promote/market it. This idea has crossed my mind several times, I just needed some real examples to crystalize it for me. I can’t wait for the course.

As in the example of the remora, this is probably as close to a “free ride” as anyone can get in business. Of course, you still have to work for what you get, but I’m sure this will cut start-up costs for many who go this route.

    Thanks again. Love your site!

    • James Clear says:

Thanks Chris! I really excited to share The Remora Method with you (and everyone else).

p.s. I’m glad you’re enjoying Passive Panda! Thanks for reading.

      • luis says:

thenaks so much for your ilustrated cases of people and money. I realy need to improve my economy situation, increase my incomes…
maybe I coud to something similar with …the woman who sold makeup. OR think quickly in another remora case to put in practice.
tahnks you so mucch from Buenos Aires.

  2. Hey James, great article!

As you and I discussed in your interview, this method of being a “symbiotic parasite” is very powerful indeed, and is what we have used ourselves again and again.

When one finds a friendly hosting to partner with, it removes much of the difficulty for a bootstrapping entrepreneur in terms of: 1) focusing on the product/service and 2) finding customers to whom you can market.

    • James Clear says:

Agreed. Finding a solid partner makes life much, much easier on new entrepreneurs, freelancers, and anyone looking to earn more money.

      Thanks for reading Spence!

  3. Luis says:

    Hi James,

I think that this method makes perfect sense and is a great piece of knowledge to keep in mind, when planning a future business. I have almost zero experience as an entrepreneur, so I’ll be super interested for more detailed information of how to put this into action :)

    All the best

    • James Clear says:

I agree, Luis. It’s a very sensible approach and it’s also an approach that can be quickly implemented whether you have a lot of experience working for yourself or not. That’s just another reason The Remora Method is so powerful.

      Thanks for reading Passive Panda!

  4. Janet says:

I love it! It seems so simple… but why don’t more people pick up on it? I believe I’m doing something similar because I’ll be partnering with someone who has more biz chops than me, or at least has been around the block a bit more… I’m really excited!! I can just enjoy the ride :)

    • James Clear says:

Hey Janet — thanks for reading. I hope you’ve been doing well.

You’re right. The concept itself seems simple. The hard part is putting it into practice. Many people struggle with determining how they can provide value to a successful person or business, discovering how to contact them, approaching them in the right way, and building an on-going relationship.

Which is why I spent all of this time creating The Remora Method … to help people complete those steps successfully.

All of that to say: Yes, and thanks for reading! :)

  5. In the past 2 months I have been reading your website. You are doing an amazing job.
This method has its pros and cons for entrepreneurs but it worths a shot.

I began reading this blog shortly after it started. This post, and the blog as a whole, is fantastic. You are producing a great amount of value and I know that you will get that value back ten fold. How do I get to be one of the 100?

    • James Clear says:

      Thanks Morgan!

I’m glad you’ve been here since the beginning. That’s years of reading! It makes me feel good to know that I’ve been producing valuable content for that long.

I hope to see you on the inside!

  8. bee says:

I understand the Remora analogy, but that’s almost the same analogy as the leech method. If you’re rich, friends and relatives will look at you as a endless blood supply and leech on to you. That’s how they’ll scrap by. I think a lot of people already knew this analogy/comparison. A lot of them are doing it unconsciously too in the form of Welfare and/or Scam. I’m just a little disappointed that this article didn’t show a “I have done it. This is how it is done.” I understand that not everyone can duplicate what has been done, and details/results can various, but I think people would be more interested reading something that’s more concrete. The article is too broad to actually utilize it in a manner that would benefit anyone reading it.

    • Kartik says:

I understand what you are saying about being a leech. I wouldn’t want to be one, either. I wouldn’t feel right about always taking, taking, taking, and never giving.

The Remora Method, if I understand James correctly, is not about being a leech. It’s about creating a partnership with an existing business in which you both win. It’s about creating a win-win situation. The business allows you to market and sell your products/services to its customers, a product/service that it doesn’t want to or can’t provide. In return, you agree to share the profits with the business.

      I hope this helps.

      • James Clear says:

Thanks Kartik. You hit the nail on the head. The Remora Method is about creating a mutually beneficial partnership with an existing business. You are focusing on solving a need for them and making life easier on yourself at the same time. Everybody wins.

        • Jeananne says:

All societies are based on this idea, mutual benefits, we PAY others for servicing us (doctors, teachers, bakers, drivers, etc…); in return someone is paying us for servicing them (same list). Whether we name it services, mutual benefits, or Remora Method, this is how we live in this world, give and take. This is totally different than welfare and scam, where a person is just taking without paying with either money or service.

I just wanted to share my view on this method and, with all due respect, to comment on Bee’s idea of liking it to being a leech.

    • mark says:

Bee…your definition of “almost the same” is different from mine. There’s a huge fundamental difference in that the remora forms a symbiotic relationship and the leech purely takes what it can, not giving anything in return. As for “specifics”, I believe he addresses that in his course. Even still, the specifics are the interesting and valuable part. This article gives a framework and is thought provoking for those who may have too narrow a focus on entrepreneurship. Well written I think.

  9. Adrian B. Dean says:

@Bee – I think that you confuse what a remora does versus a leech. A remora is a symbiote. A leech is a parasite.

    See the difference.

Also if you notice, he has more information that will become available soon, all you need to do is sign up for the notification, using the box above.

Granted you will have to pay for this information, but since I found this site last week, I’ve looked through most of the posts. I’ve looked at a lot of his tweets, both @James_Clear and @passivepanda. I can say that he gives enough, that if you take the nuggets and run with them that something good will come of it.

Action is the most important thing. He gave three examples earlier if you read the post. Use those and start today.

Also, from what I’ve seen, he will take the time to answer your questions. So give him a shout and see where it takes you.

    • James Clear says:

      Thanks Adrian.

You’re right. The Remora Method is focused on creating a partnership that you can provide value to and that can do the same for you. Both parties end up benefiting.

Will you still have to work hard to provide value? Of course … but you will also make life much easier on yourself than by trying to do it all on your own.

As you mentioned, this is the complete opposite of a leech/going on welfare/running a scam … where you merely take as much as you can with little regard for the other person. That’s a terrible way to live, let alone do business.

p.s. I’m glad you have found the information useful thus far. I’m always doing my best to provide the best information possible and run a profitable business at the same time. Thanks for being a part of Passive Panda!

  10. signed up James, i hope to learn a thing or 2.

The only thing that most people struggle with is this – Find a business that your product or service can help.

    or more specifically “your product”

It takes a lot of knowledge or a lot of money to create a product that is going to be good value to users.

Sure if you already have an amazing product, something that is actually going to help people, then affiliates will jump at the chance to help promote the product, mainly because they know its good and therefore will will likely be good for their audience.

But as i said creating a product like this either takes in-depth knowledge and out-of-the-box thinking to come up with an idea (let alone the knowledge needed to actually create the product – design work, copywriting, programming) or sh*t loads of cash to pay someone else to do it for you.

    • James Clear says:

      Thanks for joining!

As for it taking a lot of money or knowledge to create a great product, I have mixed feelings.

First, I think your comment is aimed at internet marketing (which is what you do). That’s fine, but I just want to point out that offering a service or product may be a different process and have different challenges for other people (freelancers, local business owners, etc.).

That said, I think that you bring up some good points. Building a good product isn’t easy.

The good news is that many people simply give up because of the issues you listed above. They say, “I don’t have $10,000 to build a product or pay people to do it for me” or “I’m not a genius or a visionary” … and the result is that they simply think they can’t do it.

As a result, there is a huge opportunity for people who aren’t geniuses and don’t have a ton of money, but are willing to do a little bit of work and research and follow the right patterns.

This is actually one of the reasons that The Remora Method works so well. When you have a clear blueprint to follow (so that you don’t waste your time and get burnt out), you realize just how big the results can be if you’re willing to put in the work that others don’t put in.

Moral of the story: No, it’s not easy. But, yes, it is possible if you’re willing to put in a bit of hard work and if you have a roadmap to follow, so that you don’t waste your time and energy trying to “figure it all out”…

Anyway, I hope to see you inside The Remora Method! Thanks for reading Passive Panda!

  11. Matt Roth says:

I developed a cell phone app on Android and am looking to partner with a company. Hoping somebody will maybe read this who would like to partner up. The app is called “BookMyBand” and it basically auto-fills emails with the venue’s and booker’s name while sending a template to multiple venues. It has a database of every live music venue in the US. The app sends the template to every venue that you checked off in a certain area.

Thanks for all of the advice you have provided James! Every article I read, I get more excited for the next post.

    • James Clear says:

Thanks Matt! Happy to provide as much useful advice as possible … although I certainly don’t pretend to have all the answers. :)

p.s. Good luck finding a partner for that app.

  12. Tram Tran says:

Thank you James and all the comments above. I sure learn a thing or 2

  13. James

    This sounds perfect.

I have actual evidence that it works.

For the first 30 years of my working life, I worked for large corporate organizations.

Then 6 years ago I started my own on-line business. It took me 3 years of working part-time while still holding down the full-time job to get things working.

Eventually I gave up the corporate world, 3 years ago and work full-time on my on-line business.

The biggest turn around for me was when I partnered with another IM expert and we created our own ‘build an on-line business’ product. Since the partnership we have created more products/WordPress plugins.

    • James Clear says:

It’s great to hear about results like this Andrew. It’s true. This really is the easiest way for most people to make a big shift and start seeing results.

      Thanks for reading Passive Panda!

  14. Ana says:

It really does take an extravert to do this partnering. I’d be overwhelmed with the idea of having to actually convince someone to partner with me. I also don’t have an idea that would be appropriate for partnering — yet.

    • James Clear says:

Well, at some point we all have to reach out and talk to someone, but I don’t think that you have to be a born salesman or networker or extrovert to make a partnership work.

There are successful people of all personalities in business and partnerships like those described in The Remora Method are no different.

It just takes the right approach to make a shy person feel comfortable … but it is definitely a reasonable way to earn money for anyone.

Loud and talkative people aren’t the only rich people in the world. :)

p.s. Thanks for reading and commenting Ana! You’re thoughts are always welcome on Passive Panda.

  15. I love this idea!

A great example is freelancing for a company that provides blogs to companies! Great experience for me, with none of the business work of advertising and client support.

    Thanks for the tips!

    • James Clear says:

      Absolutely. That’s a perfect example.

The nice thing is that once you understand how to create these partnerships, you can do it over and over again, upgrade to bigger and better partners, and really start to generate a solid income.

      Thanks for reading!

  16. C. Franz says:

Just wanted to say that this may be the answer to “what’s next” for me . Thanks for the help! Looking forward to hearing more…

    • James Clear says:

I’m glad to hear that! I’ll be sharing more with you soon.

Hopefully, I’ll see you inside The Remora Method when it opens. :)

p.s. Thanks for commenting. Your thoughts are always welcome here.

Interesting post. In my view managing time is a very critical factor along with some important factors you have mentioned.

    Thanks for sharing.

  18. Savvy Scot says:

Great post – Excited to hear more about your new product :D

I’m excited to share it with you! Make sure to sign up for the Priority Notification list at the bottom of this article if you want the first crack at joining.

      Thanks for commenting!

  19. Taline says:

I love it! Great analogy and I think more people need to think in those terms than to go at it alone.

    • James Clear says:

Obviously, I agree. Partnering with a successful person or business makes life easier on everyone.

More customers for you. More value for the business. More value for the customers. Everybody wins.

  20. Can’t wait – this sounds great. Just what we need in the day of ever-changing google algorithms, decreasing response to emails and over-crowded article marketing directories. Bring it on James!

  21. Dave Young says:

Super metaphor. We’re using a white label to spin off multiple remoras by becoming a service that multiple other marketing firms can use for their own clients.

  22. Sergio Felix says:

    Wow James,

Time couldn’t be better for this.

I recently decided to parner with my brother in law and create a very small business for local offline clients.

He’s an e-Marketing Director and I’m a Systems Engineer and the idea is to join our strenghts and offer a unique mix.

Have to say we already landed our first client and they upsold for $1,500.00 USD that’s our very first client.

Still can’t believe it and we’re doing exactly what you’re showcasing here.

Funny how little is the world. ;-)

  23. Carol says:

I am looking for work, and this idea is another approach to becoming employed again. I really want to balance my private life with work life, and still feel contributing to society. This is a great article, and something to think about.
Thanks James and all those who have posted comments.

  24. Linda says:

Gosh James, my eyes have been glued to this page. Thank you for it. It’s been a great pleasure sharing your interesting articles. I have a wonderful business that can help so many more people. If there is another fantastic method of marketing it, I want to know.

  25. Will says:

Great ideas James! Keep us updated.

  26. Deb says:

Great post. Do you have any specific pointers to help on how to approach and convince a larger business to partner? They obviously take a cut of the profits. If your margins are already low, it is kinda difficult.

  27. Karen says:

I love your concept. I can’t wait to get started on utilizing it. I was very unsure on how to determine my services, product, fees, etc. But reading the first article was a big eye opener. Keep it coming! Thank you.

  28. I’m so excited to continue learning. Signed up and rearin’ to go!

    • James Clear says:

I’m really excited to have you in the course, Kami! I can’t wait to start working together and it’s going to be exciting to see your progress throughout The Remora Method.

  29. Louis says:

Great idea James! Starting business as a side income is really the best way to start and with your Remora Method I guess the fears of finally leaving employment and becoming a full time entrepreneur will be a smooth transition. Will definitely share this idea to friends.

  30. Paul says:

I am very interested in your program. Right now I am very busy with other projects that I am working on, but I believe that I will take your course. I just can’t do it now, so I don[‘t want to get the free lesson until I have time to focus on your program. Still I am wondering what the cost of the program will be. I would like to know so I can budget. If you don’t want to announce the price to all your subscriber here in the comments, then please send it to my email.

  31. Andrew says:

Hi James, great stuff! Am having the same “struggles” with my product (lifestyle pillow). Have been peeking sales due to some online promotions but besides that it’s a challenge to keep momentum and grow a healthy customer base. Am looking forward!
    Cheers from Amsterdam, NL.

  32. Phrank says:

Looks like I may be too late to get in on this, but it sounds like just what I’ve been looking for. I’ve been looking to start my own business for a while now…I’ve got a million ideas, but the hardest part seems to be just getting started. Well James if your out there I’ve sent you my email address, the “priority list” link is gone.

Will like to partner with Law firms or websites that are intakers of this patients like ASBESTOS.COM
    I will appreciate your advice.

  35. Shawn says:

James, Just started my own consulting business. My biggest fear now is not only attracting customers but closing the deal. Interested in figuring out how partner with CPA and Attorney firms since we have the same clientel. Thanks!

    • James Clear says:

Shawn — congrats on starting the business. Starting is always the hardest part.

Make sure you sign up for priority notification and I’ll be sure to send more info your way. Looking forward to working with you!

  36. Thank you for the insightful read. I’ve been looking for ways to promote Bud Heath’s new e-book Humantics to the world, and I never really considered partnering with perhaps a local bookstore or an online retailer. I guess the first and most difficult step is composing an inviting pitch letter to prospective alliances.

Once again, thank you for the post…encouraging and helpful.

I have been a frustrated piano/keyboard player for years. I had played in a few good bands in Maine but never really got any real notice or break. Life dictated providing a real and tangible income for my family and thus had turned to being a Ford mechanic for many years.

I am self taught and cannot read music. I did however manage a music store in Northern Maine for years. I will never forget the increased amount of keyboard sales in our store simply due to the fact that i played in front of the cutomers all the time, which made it very tangible for them. And thats why they bought keyboards.

I knew all the theory despite not being able to read the music. That was everyone else’s block also… If I were to increase a music store’s keyboard sales exponentially, (especially a chain of stores) that would be ” The Remora Method” precisely. I could instruct either in store or out but direct them to that particular store for a cut. And from there work on spreading out!!!!

Great article! I didn’t realize I was using The Remora Method until now. I recently started to freelance as a programmer, and instead of looking for customers myself, I joined a freelance community. They make it easy for me to find clients, and I pay them a small percentage of what I earn so it is mutually beneficial.

  39. Victor G says:

I wonder how many Remora’s are accidentally eaten by their hosts? Food for thought.

    • James Clear says:

Not many, it’s a mutually beneficial relationship. That said, it’s a fair point to consider.

One advantage that we have in business that the remora doesn’t have in the ocean is that we can build mutually beneficial partnerships with many companies … not just one. That provides some insulation and protection if one of them decides to take over the relationship. Moral of the story: you don’t have to play the role of the victim.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Victor.

I enjoyed reading the Remora method and I believe it does work, unfortunately, I’ve always been in that second group that is always fumbling around. LOL. Right now I’m looking to partner with others so I can offer my sea glass jewelry to more people. Thanks so much for the insights.

I think the remora method is beautiful…one fish being big one fish being small … It’s how the work in union together and how they have a need to take care of each other as they travel around the deep waters together

My question is, what kind of negotiation do you start with when you talk to the business in question? 50/50? 70/30? And by what means would you suggest contacting them to get started?

  45. Sorina says:

I’m not sure if this is offer is still valid, but I entered my email to your notification list James.

It looks like something I am really interested in, how to find the right partners that have the skills that I miss.

But can I ask you a question? Doesn’t everyone secretly desires to be the shark and not the Remora fish?

I love your blog. Was trying to find an app or a site to help create an app. I have no programming experience at all. A friend of mine told me about your blog and thought it may be a great place for me to begin.

  50. Seems like a great idea. I have just started my online business and have been looking for ways to make my site a success. There are many articles with tips but I have been looking for a course or a series that can keep me up dated all the time rather than reading a post and forgetting about it. Your post seems a good option. I have signed up to your notification list above and can’t wait to get started.
