How to Boost Your Income Without Much Work: 5 Examples of The Remora Method in Practice

Would you like to learn a legitimate and reliable way to boost your income — either for yourself or for your business — without working all day, every day?

At the beginning of 2012, I asked the Passive Panda community what type of information would be most useful to you … and it was pretty clear that you wanted an answer to the question above.

Oh, and you also said that…

1. I don’t have money to invest.
2. I’m not sure how to get started.
3. I don’t have an idea yet (or I have way too many).

So, I went off to my research lab (i.e. my laptop and phone) and started doing interviews, surveys, and investigating everything I could find on the topic of earning more money.

What I found was a group of people who are consistently earning money by following a strategy that is the complete opposite of what most people do.

Using insights from these people and their stories, I developed The Remora Method.

Let me give you some real examples of how you can use it right now.

How The Remora Method Works

If you want the full story of The Remora Method, then read this article.

The brief version goes like this…

The remora is a small fish that can attach to the bottom of sharks and other large marine animals. The shark transports the remora through the water, provides it with protection, and even brings it food from the scraps that fall while the shark eats. In exchange, the remora cleans harmful bacteria from the shark and keeps it healthy.

This mutually beneficial relationship allows the remora to avoid the struggles of finding food and avoiding predators that most fish deal with on a daily basis.

And within the remora’s strategy is a key insight that successful people use to boost their income…

Just as the remora partners with a strong host species to provide protection and food, you can partner with a strong host business that can easily provide you with a supplemental income. (Or boost your revenue if you’re running a business.)

5 Examples That You Can Use Today

The true beauty of The Remora Method is that it creates win–win situations for everyone involved.

When done right, the customer gets more value, the business partner gets more value, and you get paying customers with very little work.

To show you exactly what I mean, let me share 5 real life examples of The Remora Method in practice.

Take note of how each example creates a win–win situation for everyone involved. The reason The Remora Method works so well is because it’s focused on helping everyone, not on being selfish and trying to pull as much money out of people as possible.

Freelance Writing

Tiffany Silverberg is a freelance marketing writer.

When she started searching for work, she noticed that many clients didn’t just want freelance writing services, they needed an entire branding makeover.

Instead of trying to sell customers on something that didn’t totally meet their needs, Tiffany decided to partner with a graphic designer and negotiated a deal where they would each offer a 20% discount on their services to the other person’s customers.

The end result looks like this: they both get more business because they can offer a wider range of services to clients. The customers get more value and have a service that can meet their branding and writing needs. And Tiffany and her business partner end up making more money overall.

Win. Win. Win.

The Make-Up Example

There are plenty of women who sell Mary Kay makeup, but a woman named Lisa Asbell went about it in a totally different way.

Lisa was the recent mother of twins when she decided to start selling the products in her small town. Instead of going door–to–door, she partnered with a local business to sell her makeup in the store.

She brought a product that customers wanted and that the store didn’t have. The store brought customers that Lisa didn’t have time to find on her own. And together, they split the profits. It was a perfect Remora Method partnership.

Twelve months later Lisa was bringing in $50,000 per year from makeup side business.

What About Startup Companies and Small Biz?

The Remora Method works well for startups and small businesses too!

Just yesterday, I heard from a technology startup in Texas called SpareFoot. They use technology to find the best deals for self–storage.

SpareFoot recently partnered with Penske Truck Rental to offer it’s services to Penske customers.

I don’t have all the details of the partnership yet, but my guess is that Penske will receive a referral fee for each customer they send to SpareFoot. SpareFoot will get a new customer. And the customers will get a useful service that they wouldn’t have otherwise found … and save money on storage at the same time.

You can see SpareFoot listed on Penske’s website here. Right next to The Home Depot, no less.

Again, this a perfect example of The Remora Method in practice and it proves that you don’t have to think small when thinking about partnerships.

Penske has been around for more than 40 years and has developed a strong, nationwide brand … and yet the small startup SpareFoot was still able to partner with them!

The Landscaping Example

Let’s play the hypothetical game for a moment, shall we?

We are going to pretend that you run a landscaping business. What types of products and services do your customers buy before they buy from you?

Well, let’s see… new home owners often want landscaping done. So that means real estate agencies, moving companies, and contractors are all possible places that your customers are already hanging out.

Do you think those businesses would like to offer their customers a free voucher for 20% off landscaping? Or maybe they would like a referral fee for each landscaping job of $5,000 or more? Or maybe they would like to give their customers a coupon for $500 off landscaping materials when they purchase a landscaping design session.

Do you see all the possibilities that are available for partnerships? You can structure them in many ways, which allows you to meet the exact needs and desires of the customers and your business partner.

The Ebook Example

Perhaps you’ve heard about bloggers selling ebooks online. Some of them (this is no joke) are making over $1 million per MONTH selling a single ebook.

OK, back to reality.

What if you just want $1000 per month? How would you go about selling your first ebook? And what if you have no online presence or traffic to your website?

Well, here’s one way you could do it using The Remora Method…

First, write the ebook that you want to sell.

Then, write a short guide, whitepaper, or report (maybe 10 pages or so) that is filled with very useful content on a related topic to your full ebook. You could even pull a chapter out of your regular ebook and use that.

At the end of the guide, include a link to your paid ebook. Make sure you have a very clear call to action that tells people the benefits of the full ebook and where to go to get it.

Then, and this is the Remora Method part, you reach out to bloggers and internet entrepreneurs who are talking about similar topics and have an audience that would love your content.

You send them the free report (the one with tons of value and a link to your paid ebook at the end) and tell them that they are free to send it to their audience, give it away for free, or add it as a bonus download for any products they are selling. Let them know that you’re trying to get your name out there and you’re happy to give away tons of value for free.

Many bloggers are looking for bonuses to add to the products they are already selling because it increases the value that customers see in their product.

At the end of the day, the customers get more value. The bloggers you partner with get a free bonus to give away. And you get traffic and customers coming to you. Make sense?

The Remora Method sells out

When I initially opened The Remora Method, I intentionally kept the group small (100 students) so that I could tweak the program and improve it based on their feedback.

True to my word, I told everyone on the Priority Notification List when the course was available first … and they jumped all over it.

Those first 100 slots sold out in a few days. The course filled up so fast that I barely had time to email the whole Passive Panda community about it. I got off one email to everyone not on the Priority Notification list about 12 hours before it closed.

Then, I started getting emails from people who missed out on the first 100 slots.

Can you make an exception? Is it possible to pay extra to get in? Etc…

I was flattered that there was that much interest in the course, but I stood my ground and nobody extra joined.

Sidenote: There’s a good business lesson in all of this. If you stand by your word even when it means passing up sales, then your customers know that they can trust you.

In this case, you know that when I say something closes at midnight, it really closes at midnight. And you can trust that my attitude of standing by my word extends to other areas of business as well.

Here’s How to Not Miss Out…

The Remora Method is re–opening next week.

If you missed out on the first round and would love to give it a try, then make sure you sign up for the Priority Notification List below.

When the doors open, the people on the Priority Notification List will get the first shot at signing up.

Based on how quickly things went last time, I can’t promise that you’ll have a chance if you don’t move fast. I apologize for that, but I have worked incredibly hard on this program and I provide individualized feedback to each student in The Remora Method, so I have to limit the number of people that join.

Even if you don’t get in this round, I’m going to send the first lesson of The Remora Method to everyone who joins the priority notification list before next Monday, June 4th.

Yes — even though it’s taken 3 months of work and over 5,300 data points, surveys, and interviews for me to develop The Remora Method, I’m still going to give you the first lesson for free.

To get the free lesson and priority notification of when The Remora Method opens, simply enter your email below.

Note: this email list will only be used to notify you of The Remora Method.

P.S. Here’s What Current Students Are Saying

I figured you might be interested in what some students have to say about the course. Here are some testimonials from current students in The Remora Method.

All of them are unprompted, unrehearsed, and totally awesome.

I love this course so far! Thank you so much for putting this together and for making it affordable. I already can’t wait for the next section to become available.

I can’t tell you how tinged with excitement I am!  I did Lessons 4 and 5 last night just before going to bed.  They created so much clarity for me.  I woke up before dawn with so many ideas floating through my head.  As I started noting them down, I realized part of the reason why I’m so excited is because the Remora Method just makes sense to me!  It creates a win-win-win situation for you, your partner, and the customer—what can be better than this!
—Kartik B.

This is great & will help get me going until Module 3 comes out! Thanks for the input… I am getting pretty excited that after years of “thinking” about building my own business I am finally taking tangible and meaningful steps toward making it a reality. “Take Action” is a powerful motivator!
—Chance M.

Module 2 sparked a lot of ideas for me. Your process is helping me think more creatively about finding new clients.
—Amy P.

The possibilities with your “HARO Technique” are endless. Thank you so much! What an awesome concept.
—Chris C.

It is rare that I find someone who has enlightened me the way you have with just the little you have revealed. You are like the “Sun Tzu” of business strategy … your strategies are so simple and yet so effective.

I’ve been working on these principles myself. As a holistic health practitioner, I’ve been meeting with chiropractors, looking for one who would like to provide additional support to their clients in the areas of nutrition and lifestyle.

What I’ve found is that these chiropractors have a hard time not being the one in control. I’ve had an offer to become an employee (which would essentially stop my business from moving forward), and another practitioner asking me to parrot his own dietary principles to all of his clients. While his principles work well for him, I know that many people (myself included) would find it hard to thrive on an entirely raw diet.

I’m still looking for a good match, but it’s great to hear that other people are moving forward with steps like these. Thanks for sharing, James.

I’ve been reading for your blog for a little while now, everything you speak of has been highly inspiring and informative. I was wondering though if there is anyway I could get in contact with Lisa Asbell as I myself am a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant, and I would greatly enjoy having the chance to ask her some questions and learn from her. If you can’t or she is unwilling I completely understand, thank you for your time, I hope this finds you in good health and high spirits.

Best post I’ve read in a long time! Just bookmarked it! The Remora Method is so powerful because it really lets your business be a lot more passive. The days of walking door to door and coldcalling are dead – it is SO much easier and A LOT more effective to use to use The Remora Method. LOVE the eBook and Landscaping examples!

I’m thinking of a way that this could be used for mobile apps! :)

Finally found something useful in my inbox.

I have one question – in another article which you published several weeks back, you wrote on how to approach this “shark” of the industry that I’m working and interested in.You said that the best way is to meet a man/woman in person. Now,if I arrange a lunch at a nice ass restaurant – who shall pay the bill? Shall it be split,or is it polite for me as an inviter to pay the bill?

    • James Clear says:

Easy answer for this one: If you invite them, then you should pay for the lunch.

      • Sean Mysel says:

I’m a huge fan of this method and used it to land two jobs in managing sports facilities. What I would do is ask to shadow managers of facilities like Yankee Stadium, Citizens Bank Park, etc.

What it allowed me to do is get to know people and vice versa.

Before I moved to California and started my golf coaching biz, I had a $70k job and got offered another job with the company managing the Phillies park.

        Preach on!

    • Joe says:

I think that’s a question of basic etiquette to which most people would instinctively know the answer. Your homework is to start reading a column like “Money Manners”.

  5. Flor says:

I would like to know if there is any other method other than bugging family and friends for this business…I know it is a very lucrative business, but I would like to know if there are other methods to reach people out there..what would you recommend?

    • James Clear says:

      Hi Flor,

I actually think bugging friends and family should be one of the last things you should do. There are tons of businesses out there — and they all want to get more customers or to earn more from the customers they already have — a good partnership can do both for them and bring you paying clients. That’s what The Remora Method teaches.

  6. Andrea Gold says:

I’ve always been skeptical of these money making schemes. Most of them are MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) groups that are actually pretty successful. However, I think their success comes mostly from getting people pumped up to sell the product and then forcing them to pay $80+ for a “Starter” or “Distributors” kit. I wonder how many of these people get suckered into buying a kit and then never sell a thing. I would guess that this is one of the biggest revenue generators for the company. On the other hand, I know quite a few people that are involved in MLM groups that actually make a decent amount of money. I just wish these companies would do trial periods for sellers to see if they can catch on and get the hang of it. If they don’t then just refund what they paid for the starter kit.

    • James Clear says:

      Hi Andrea,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m not entirely sure what you’re referring to when talking about MLM’s. The only multi-level marketing idea mentioned was Mary Kay, but you can use The Remora Method in pretty any case that doesn’t involve MLM as well (as the other 4 examples show).

If you have any questions feel free to send them my way. I’m always happy to help out.

  7. Mavis Barry says:

The income boost that you need should be calculated before you start pursuing your business ideas. Calculate the amount of extra income you need in order to meet extra bills, provide your family with extras or to save for special occasions. That amount should be a monthly online income that you will strive for in your online ventures. Keep track of how much you earn from your online business ideas, dropping the ones that don’t provide you with the income boost that you want. Eventually, you will be left with one or two business ideas that are performing well for you, earning that extra income that you need from your online pursuits.

  8. Tiffany Atkins says:

    Thank you!

  9. Phuong Le says:

I am trying to be a pro freelancer writer ;)

  10. Another great way of earning income without investing much is through blogging and affiliate marketing. But I must say that you have least very great strategies I personally did not know about. Thank you for sharing.

  11. Mark says:

The ebook idea is interesting, I’ve seen these offered on a couple financial blogs I visit on a regular basis. Would you combine blog posts to create an ebook or do you need to create one first and then establish an audience? I wonder how much they are offering them for, probably not that expensive. Thanks for the advice! – Mark.

  12. XeBii Mj says:

    Hey James,

After reading the article you made me Day Dreaming :(
Now I’m thinking about quitting my job & start a new online business.

  13. Cat says:

Wow. This is almost too much info to handle. Thanks for peeking my interest to apply some of these ideas to my own business.

  14. Pam says:

It is funny that you mention ebook sales. My cousin sells ebooks and makes over $1,000 a month from the. It is a great business but you need to know what you are doing.

  15. Ben says:

I’m definitely guilty of the ‘too many ideas’ sticking point. Great tips on moving forward, James.
